SACRAMENTO CREATIVE WRITING NONPROFIT 916 INK HOSTS ITS FIRST ANNUAL FAMILY LITERACY FAIR
Bringing Together Reading and Writing, In Honor of 916 Ink’s 10th Birthday and National Literacy Month
[SACRAMENTO, CA, July 22, 2021] - In honor of National Literacy Month, Sacramento creative writing and youth literacy organization 916 Ink will be launching its first annual Family Literacy Fair: “Pick Your Path!” This free event for K-6 youth and their families will include reading and writing activities, book giveaways, resources for parents to continue the learning at home, storytime readings with local author Dr. JaNay Brown-Wood and more, and special appearances by the Sacramento Republic FC and Rhymosaurs.
National Literacy Month is dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of reading and writing, because grade-level reading in elementary school is one of the strongest predictors of future success, academic and otherwise. At 916 Ink, we understand how integral writing is to reading, and vice versa. This literacy fair is unique because it is bringing together writing and reading activities with 916 Ink’s trademark whimsy and creative touch.
The activity stations will include “Syllable Scavenger Hunt,” zine-making, hula-hoop storytelling, and much more! These activities demonstrate how reading and writing are intertwined and encourage youth to engage with both. 916 Ink will also help parents continue the learning at home by offering resources such as handouts, activities, and tips.
“COVID-19 has been hard on our youth,” said 916 Ink's Director of Development Allison Stelly. “Reading scores are plummeting, and extra-curricular activities are limited right now. This event will help youth and their families get back on track as we head back to school.”
The Pick Your Path: Family Literacy Fair will take place on Thursday, September 16, from 4 – 7 PM at the 916 Ink Imaginarium (3301 37th Avenue, Sacramento, CA). The event will be outdoors.
For more information, attendees can visit the event on Eventbrite or Facebook.
916 Ink is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that has been serving the youth of the Sacramento area for nearly 10 years. Its mission is to empower youth through creative writing and has helped more than 4,000 children and teenagers become confident writers.
